Every business needs reliable internet, but not every connection type is built for business use. In South Africa you’ll typically choose between fibre, fixed LTE and 5G — and while the marketing brochures make them all sound similar, they behave very differently once you put real workloads on them.
Fibre: the gold standard
Fibre delivers data over glass, which means it isn’t affected by weather, distance from a tower, or how many neighbours are streaming at 8pm. You get symmetrical or near-symmetrical speeds, low latency, and consistency — the three things that matter most for VoIP calls, video meetings, cloud applications and remote backups.
If fibre is available at your premises, it should almost always be your primary connection. Coverage in South Africa has expanded enormously, with networks like Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot and MetroFibre covering most urban and many peri-urban areas.
Fixed LTE: the practical fallback
Fixed LTE uses the mobile network with a router installed at your premises. It’s quick to deploy — often live within a day — and it works where fibre hasn’t reached. The trade-offs are variable speeds (you share tower capacity with everyone nearby), higher latency, and data caps or fair-use policies on many packages.
LTE shines in two roles: as a temporary connection while you wait for a fibre installation, and as an automatic failover link so your business stays online if the fibre line is cut or the network has an outage.
5G: fast, but location-dependent
Where coverage is strong, 5G can rival entry-level fibre speeds. The catch is that coverage is still patchy, performance varies significantly by location and network congestion, and latency — while better than LTE — still can’t match fibre. For a business, 5G is best treated as a premium alternative to LTE in areas without fibre, or as a high-capacity failover.
What actually matters for business use
- Latency and jitter — critical for VoIP and video calls. Fibre wins comfortably.
- Upload speed — cloud backups, file sharing and hosted applications all depend on upstream capacity, which wireless connections often skimp on.
- Consistency — a connection that’s fast at 10am but crawls at 4pm costs you productivity every single day.
- Redundancy — no single connection is bulletproof. Pairing fibre with an LTE/5G failover gives you genuine business continuity.
Our recommendation
Fibre as primary wherever it’s available, with a wireless failover sized to keep your essential systems (email, VoIP, card machines, cloud apps) running during an outage. If fibre isn’t available yet, fixed LTE or 5G will do the job while you register interest for a fibre rollout in your area.
